Attracting birds to your yard
OF FA NC Y
Create a rest stop for birds and you’ll be
rewarded with a cheerful flash of color
and flurry of activity in your yard on dull
winter days.
Just follow these simple tips for providing
water, shelter and food.
Bird Baths:
Place one about 15 feet from areas where
predators can easily hide.
Keep the water fresh and the bath clean.
Use an immersion heater in cold climates
to keep ice from forming.
Bird Houses:
Choose the right-sized entry for the type
of bird you’d like to attract.
Hang on a pole, hook or branch, about
5 feet off the ground. Some birds prefer
higher or lower nests.
Hang a mesh bag nearby. Fill it with
nesting material like twigs, short string
or bits of cotton.
Feeders:
Use shepherds’ hooks, poles or hangers
to hang feeders at different heights.
Shelter feeders from the elements, but
not too near spots where predators might
be hiding.
Keep them full. Birds quickly move on to
another spot where more food is available.
Use quality seed. It contains less ller
and more nourishment.
Use the right feeder for the food.
Bird seed, suet, nuts, fruit or nectar help birds when food is scarce or when extra energy
is needed during migration. The more variety you provide, the more types of birds you’ll attract.
